ITG: The Beauty Queen of Leenane (29 March – 2 April ’11)

The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a 1996 black comedy by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a darkly comedic tragedy by Martin McDonagh. Critically acclaimed, it premiered in 1996 as a co-production of the Druid Theatre/Royal Court Theatre moving to New York in 1998 and garnering multiple awards on both sides of the pond.

The play tells the story of two women, mother and daughter, caught up in a claustrophobic relationship. But who is the manipulator and who will win in their struggle for power. The catalyst that will lead to the shocking conclusion is the entrance of a man into the life of the daughter Maureen. Maureen wants the man and the mother, Mag, wants things to remain the same.

Ferris Wheel by Mary Miller directed by Chris Flores starring Daniel Prior (All My Sons) and Hurmayonne Morgan (Anton in Showbusiness) takes the audience on an emotional and humorous ride that explores the private fears and struggles of two strangers stuck, dangling in the air, on this icon ride.

Table One by Morgan Fisher directed by John Stanton – You know you are in the States when everything is well, Okay! If your visiting for the first time, be sure to stop by a local diner and everything will certainly be-Okay! Okay?

The Philadelphia by David Ives – Ever had one of those days when you thought you wound up in another place and time and yet no one else even seemed to notice it? Perhaps you were actually in a Philadelphia or even a Baltimore which is very similar to a Philadelphia but not at all like a Los Angeles!

Departures written and directed by Matthew Snoding – Sitting in Brussels Airport’s departure lounge, Ian is ready to meet his girlfriend Emily’s parents for the first time. Or is he?

The Warehouse Studio Theatre

The English Comedy Club opens its 2011-2012 season from 20-24 September 2011 with Two, a black comedy by English playwright Jim Cartwright. It will visit The Place in Bedford on 31 September and 1 October.

Two is Cartwright’s second play and won the 1990 Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best New Play. It followed on from his earlier success, Road, and like that play deals with the gritty reality of northern working-class life in the 1980s.

The play focuses on the landlady, landlord and regulars of a pub in a Northern English town as they struggle to cope with the difficulties that life has thrown at them. All the parts are played by Ruth England (Oscar and the Lady in Pink, Mary Stuart, Moving Susan and FEATS best actress award recipient for Orca the Goldfish) and Rory Harvey-Kelly (ATC Café Theatre 2011). It is directed by Conrad Toft.

Tennessee Williams’ classic play, The Glass Menagerie, has held audiences spellbound ever since it was first performed over 60 years ago, and is undoubtedly among the best American plays ever written. Williams invites us into the dream-world of a mother as she weaves a fantastical web of delicate memories and deceptions, while desperately trying to find a better life for her children. For her daughter, the fragile fantasy world is all too easily shattered when the real world comes calling. For her son, a better world can only come by escape from the stifling atmosphere at home.

The American Theatre Company is proud to present this American classic to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Tennessee Williams’ birth. Starring Janet Wishnetsky, Chris Flores, Hugo de Chassiron and Clémence Robin and directed by Carrie Ellwanger.

The English Comedy Club continues its successful exchange with an English amateur dramatics society, Swan Theatre Bedford. Swan has brought high-quality productions to Brussels for the past several years.

23rd May 1934, an old barn in a southern State of America -two of the most wanted people in the US are seeing out their last few hours, showing their love for each other, laughing at their past life are fearful for what is to come.

The writer, Adam Peck, has put aside the glamour and glorification of previous renditions of the story of Bonnie and Clyde and has got inside the people in this intimate work.

ECC: Families aren’t just for Christmas (6-10 Dec 2011)

This Christmas the ECC is offering its audience a mix of something old and something new: a mix of contemporary pieces by local authors Martin Westlake, Graham Andrews, Carrie Caunce and Conrad Toft together with some classic readings from Hans Christian Andersen, O. Henry, Sir Walter Scott and others.

There is an impressive cast, with actors old and new including Alma Forsyth, Sara Hammerton, Jenny Howard, John Howard, Janet Middleton, Rory Harvey-Kelly, Cherise Silvestri, Conrad Toft, Marion Tomkins and Richard Wells.

Together, they will take you on a journey from a 17th century Christmas, through the turn of the last century, tales of a dying parent, a first Christmas together, marital pleasure and pain and finally a trip into the future to see what Christmas might look like a hundred years from now.

ITG asbl is proud to announce She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith will be presented 27-31, March 2012 at Palais des Beaux-Arts Studio Theatre.

She Stoops to Conquer is considered one of the best plays of all time. It has been called by many the precursor to the modern comedy. It is a rollicking story of mistaken identities, petty thievery, and delightful deceptions. Two young gentlemen are trying to find their way to the house of a man who has a lovely daughter to whom one of them is a proposed husband. They are told that they are hopelessly lost by the son of the house in one of his grand practical jokes. He gives them directions to an inn which is actually, unbeknownst to them, their real destination. The deception works perfectly and that is just the beginning.

ETCetera proudly presents Jean Anouilh’s “Becket” directed by Catriona White.

This historic play examines the troubled relationship between King Henry II of England and Thomas Becket, the friend whom he appoints first Chancellor of England, and later Archbishop of Canterbury. This dramatic version of events deals with the growing rift between them, leading ultimately to Becket’s violent death in his Cathedral. It deals with themes of conquest and colonialism, the struggle between Church and State, but above all questions of friendship, faith and honour.

Set in both France and Norman England, it will be performed part in French part in English, with translation on surtitles in both languages.

ECC: Move Over Mrs Markham (2-13 Oct 2012)

Mrs Markham lends her flat to Linda Lodge to tryst with her admirer Walter. The decorator is planning to use to same apartment to dally with the au pair. Mr Lodge has persuaded a very reluctant Mr Markham to lend the self-same flat to rendez-vouswith a girl he has not actually met. Into this tranquil scene walks Miss Smythe, important potential customer to Messrs Lodge and Markham, who disapproves of any kind randy behavior. It’s about then things start to get a little complicated……

In 1941, New Yorkers were looking for some entertainment to take their minds off of the war in Europe and the growing fear that America would be pulled into it. Broadway gave them exactly what they were looking for: Arsenic and Old Lace. The play became an immediate critical and popular success, running for over 1,000 performances. It also became a hit in England in 1942 as theatergoers who were suffering through post-blitz London lined up for tickets. In 1944, Hollywood produced a film version starring Cary Grant that became a huge box office success.

Mortimer is about to propose to his sweetheart when he discovers that his two dear but eccentric aunts poison lonely old bachelors with their elderberry wine and have a number of corpses buried in the cellar. And it gets worse. Throw in one brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, another who is a psychopathic killer, plus a slightly intoxicated plastic surgeon, and you’ll be laughing the entire way through.

Per Olov Enquist’s first play, “The Night of the Tribades”, about Strindberg and his first wife Siri von Essen, became an international success. It is a play about a playwright rehearsing a play, “The Stronger”, inspired by his own life, and the layers of truth and fiction succeed each other.

A group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire WI, persuade one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference – no more photos of Wharfedale bridges or Norman churches for them. Overcoming their initial reserve, the friends drop their dressing gowns, their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements.

Puzzling their husbands, mortifying their children and riding the wrath of the outraged WI, they spark a global phenomenon. But as media interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves exposed in ways they’d never expected, revealing more than they’d ever planned. A very English story with a very English heart, Calendar Girls is quirky, poignant and hilarious.

Adapted by Tim Firth from the Miramax film of the same name, it is based on an uplifting and very inspiring true story.

At 8am on 16th June 1904, Leopold Bloom goes out in search of kidneys for breakfast and finds immortality. Joyce’s Ulysses captures the essence of Dublin, finding the stuff of myth in the everyday. Funny, ribald, intellectual and earthy, Bolger’s A Dublin Bloom recreates Joyce’s epic for the theatre.

There is a cast of 12 – Bloom, Molly, Stephen and young Stephen (boy) play themselves throughout while the many characters who people Bloom’s day are played by 4 actors and 4 actresses – each taking on a variety of different roles – all ages required.

The play will be directed by Colma O’Luanaigh and will run from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 of November in the Scarabaeus Espace Théâtrale in Schaerbeek.
