ATC: 27 Wagons Full of Cotton (3-4 May 2013)

27 Wagons Full of Cotton – Tennessee Williams

3-4 May 2013 – Warehouse Studio Theatre

Williams wrote over 70 one-act plays in addition to such full-length classics as The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

27 Wagons Full of Cotton, “a Mississippi Delta comedy”, was his twentieth one-act play, written in 1946 and set in 1934 against the background of President Franklin Roosevelt’s “good neighbour” policy.

It follows the story of a cotton gin owner, Jake Meighan (Andy Blumenthal), and his young wife, Flora (Peyton Cimino). When there is a fire in the neighbouring plantation suspicion falls on Jake and the plantation superintendent, Silva Vicarro (Gareth Lewis), comes looking for his own special brand of vengeance.

ITG: The Importance of Being Earnest (21-25 May 2013)

The Irish Theatre Group are very excited to announce that the Box Office is now open for our next show, The Importance of Being Earnest, at Palais des Beaux-Arts Studio, running from Tuesday 21st to Saturday 25th May. Tickets can be purchased directly from the from the BOZAR website, by telephone (02/507.82.00) or in person.

Everyone knows (or thinks they know) Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”. Some of the lines and situations are among the most well known in the theatre world – Lady Bracknell, Algernon, the Honourable Gwendolen Fairfax have become reference figures for artifice, style and snobbery.

Andrew McIlroy’s exciting new take on Oscar Wilde’s classic sparkles, while never losing sight of the dark satire behind the façade of comedy. While the play is certainly a glittering social comedy – it is much more; it is filled with anger, deception and a biting criticism of morals and attitudes. It’s this – this darker underbelly of a much loved classic – that the forthcoming ITG production will seek to explore. It will be fun, noisy, energetic and alternative, Wilde would hopefully have approved.

Our shows normally sell out so book early to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to seeing you there!

This production is supported by the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

ETC: Antigone (25-29 June 2013)

Petite salle du Théâtre Varia, 154 Rue Gray, 1050 Bruxelles

The Theban Trilogy: When King Oedipus finally learns the truth about his identity and realizes that he has killed his father and married his mother, he responds by cutting his eyes out and going into exile. His wanderings lead him to Colonus, where he dies, leaving behind the tragic legacy of a cursed bloodline: two sons and two daughters whose fates are doomed.
Antigone is the final part of what is commonly referred to as Sophocles’ trilogy of Theban plays. The events of the play begin on the morning after the deaths of Oedipus’ sons, Polyneices and Eteocles, who kill each other in battle, one defending, the other attacking Thebes. King Creon, the city’s new leader, decrees that no one is to bury the corpse of Polyneices, who is declared a traitor to Thebes, on pain of death. Antigone chooses to take a stand against what she perceives to be unjust, and break the city’s law by burying her brother. This is a defiant and criminal act. But it is an act of self-sacrificing courage that still echoes in the heroes of today.
Expect an evening full of atmosphere, music and ancient messages that have been passed down the generations to warn audiences about the dangers of power, pride and ignorance.

ECC: Copenhagen (8-12 Oct 2013)

Tension, guilt, suppressed emotion, nuclear physics and human drama are all bound up in this intriguing play.

ATC: Twelve Angry Men (22-26 Oct 2013)

The American Theatre Company will be performing Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, directed by Deborah Griffith at the Palais de Beaux Arts Studio Theatre from 22-26 October 2013.

12 Angry Men is the story of twelve men‚ trapped in a jury room‚ who must decide on the guilt or innocence of a young man accused of murdering his father. Tensions run high as personalities come into conflict‚ stereotypes and prejudices are confronted‚ and societal assumptions are called into question.

Although the original text of this classic American drama dates from 1957‚ its message still resonates today: democracy and justice cannot function without a commitment from members of society to take part in the process. To quote Plato‚ “The price of apathy in public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”

Tickets are available from the Palais de Beaux Arts web site.

The evening includes two plays about Napoleon:

  • “Man of Destiny” by Bernard Shaw, performed in English, with French surtitles.
  • “La Dernière Salve” by Jean-Claude Brisville, performed in French, with English surtitles.

Both plays put up hypothetical relationships, some based on truth, with argument and humour, against which Napoleon the man emerges from Napoleon the myth.

The performances will take place from 5-9 November 2013 in the Warehouse Studio Theatre, rue Waelhem 69a, 1030 Schaerbeek, at 20.00.

“Man of Destiny” is directed by Hugh Dow, “La Dernière Salve” by Marc Léotard, both experienced Brussels-based theatre directors and actors.

ECC: An Ideal Husband (18-22 March 2014)

The ECC presents Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband, directed by Deborah Griffith
No man is rich enough to buy back his past.
Oscar Wilde’s dramatic comedy deals with political intrigue, blackmail and marriage – a charming combination! It raises questions about public and private honour and whether a noble future and great contribution to society should be sacrificed for past indiscretions. By setting the play in the 1950s, director Deborah Griffith demonstrates that these issues are timeless and brings an interesting new twist to Wilde’s classic play, which stands with The Importance of Being Earnest as one of his most performed masterpieces.

18 to 22 March 2014

Saturday, April 12, 11:00-16:00 – Genre workout with Peter More
The purpose of this workshop is to give us more confidence in playing genres and to show that using genres effectively helps us to create scenes and stories that are in a world that is instantly recognisable to the audience. In this workshop we will brainstorm and perform in the genres that you find difficult, challenging or mystifying. As well as getting a better understanding of these genres, we will realise that we have usually had a lot more exposure to a genre than we think we have and as a group, we know more than enough.

Sunday, April 13, 11:00-16:00 – Dancing for Dummies with Laura Doornerweerd
In this workshop, improv and dance teacher Laura Doorneweerd will teach you how to bluff your way in ballet. Or in hiphop, Bollywood, country, disco, tango and many more styles. You will learn the most important tricks and steps to make it look like you are a dancer. The audience can shout out any style in music or dance: you will know what to do. And what games you can play using your moves. Laura has taught this workshop to many Dutch, German and Swiss improv groups and it is the most fun you will have in using your body on stage. Stiff as a board? No sense for rhythm? Perfect, then book this workshop now!

About the Instructors:

Laura Doornerweerd is an improviser and trainer from Amsterdam. She is part of 3 improvisation groups, member of the artistic committee of TVA Impro and IMPRO Amsterdam and founding member of the Ohana project (Young European Improvisers)

Her style of teaching is positive and active; it is guaranteed that you will learn and laugh a lot.

Peter More has been involved with improv for coming up to 20 years. Originally from the UK, he currently lives in Amsterdam.

He performs regularly with easylaughs, Mischler and More, Dizzy and the Pit Kittens, and on his own. He believes that doing is the best way to learn. He especially likes to teach about improvising in movie genres and telling stories without really trying to tell stories.

BSS: King Lear (24-28 June 2014)

King Lear is probably the greatest of Shakespeare’s plays. Some consider it as “the grandest effort of his imagination”. Human beings were never so cruel and ‘unnatural’ as in this play; yet human beings were never shown with so much goodness, loyalty and self-sacrifice as in this play. Kings, beggars, and fools; fathers, sons and daughters; love, lust, greed, corruption, violence and war: all of these themes have a place in King Lear.

The play will be performed from 24 to 28 June 2014 at BRONKS Theatre(main stage) in Rue Marché Aux Porcs, just off  Sainte-Catherine.
