ECC: Mrs Klein (22-26 Sept 2015)

by Nicholas Wright
Warehouse Studio Theatre, 22 – 26 September at 20:00

Melanie Klein has just lost her son in what appears to be a climbing accident. His death brings the long-standing conflict with her daughter Melitta to a sharp climax. Professional rivalries mix with visceral family resentments – and taboo-breaking psychoanalytic theories. Caught (or carefully positioned) between the warring mother-daughter pair is Paula – Melitta’s friend and Mrs Klein’s would-be protégée.

Tickets (€15) can be booked at http://www.thelittleboxoffice.com/ecc

ATC: Death of a Salesman (7-11 Oct 2015)

DEATH OF A SALESMAN
Written by Arthur Miller
Directed by Glenn Vaughan

Marking the 100th anniversary of Arthur Miller’s birth, the ATC is proud to present his greatest classic, Death of a Salesman, for our October main stage.

Ever since it was first performed in 1949, Death of a Salesman has been recognized as a milestone of the American theater. In the person of Willy Loman, the aging, failing salesman who makes his living riding on a smile and a shoeshine, Arthur Miller redefined the tragic hero as a man whose dreams are at once insupportably vast and dangerously insubstantial. He has given us a figure whose name has become a symbol for a kind of majestic grandiosity—and a play that compresses epic extremes of humor and anguish, promise and loss, between the four walls of an American living room.

But this is not the beginning of a beautiful friendship, more the reaching of a plateau of understanding.

The Real Inspector Hound
Janet writes:  The Real Inspector Hound is a wonderfully funny play which I am looking forward to hamming up a bit.  I am looking for actors who have either retired from the stage or who have not yet plucked up the courage to perform – as well as some more experienced actors – by allowing the security of lines on stage if this will enhance the actors’ security.  How this will happen is secret at the moment!Subject to availability of the cast, rehearsals will be twice a week, and I would like to have at least one of those as an afternoon rehearsal, perhaps both, subject to progress (ie we might need to add a third rehearsal).Characters
Moon – M or F – any age
Birdwood – M
Mrs Drudge – F – older
Simon – M
Felicity – F – any age up to 50s
Cynthia – F – any age up to 60s
Magnus – M – older
Inspector Hound – M or F any age
Radio Voice – M or F
Body – M or F – No lines, just needs to lie still!  But this is a comedy …
Other – 6 or 7 people to act as audience.Dinner For One
Hugh writes:
Dinner for One is a two handed sketch lasting 18 minutes involving an elderly lady being served dinner by an increasing squiffy butler. The joke’s dependent upon the old lady confusing the butler with her many lovers: the ending is mildly risqué. Its claim to fame is that German TV executives, catching sight of it live in the UK in 1963, thought it would do at a pinch for New Year’s Eve television. Since then it has unaccountably become a part of required German, Swiss, Swedish, Danish, Faroese and heaven-knows where else’s required Hogmanay viewing. Most northern Germans know it off by heart. So funny little sketch or cultural phenomenon, take your pick.If either of If these plays interests you, please come along to audition!  Janet and Hugh would be happy to hear from anyone who would like to register their interest or have further information.

Hugh: 0494 33 7025 or hughjamesdow@gmail.com

CREW
We are also hoping to encourage new back stage crew – so if you’ve had a secret hankering to become involved without having to perform on stage, now is your chance to let us know!  We will find you someone to help you along the way, so please don’t think you’ll just get thrown in and left to flounder.  To register your interest, please contact Janet – or just come along to the AGM.

Following on from the successful productions of Jack & the Beanstalk in December 2013 and Aladdin in January 2015, the ECC is proud to present a brand new panto –Dick Whittington and His Magical Cat! This well-loved British tale is (very loosely!) based on the legends surrounding Richard Whittington (Lord Mayor of London from 1354-1423) and is told with humour and energy and promises to be great fun for all the family.

Dick Whittington leaves a country village with his cat, Tommy, to make his fortune in London, where the streets are paved with gold. When he arrives he finds, instead streets overrun by rats.

This launches Dick on an adventure that takes him from London to Brussels and beyond. Along the way, he meets the girl of his dreams, Alice, as well as Alderman Fitzgerald, Sarah the Cook, King Rat and many, many others, including you!

This is a new piece of writing for the ITG. We look back, from very personal perspectives, over some of the key events of the 100 years which separate us from Easter 1916 and the proclamation of the Irish Republic.

Casting both a cold eye and a tender eye on Ireland…more accurately, lending an ear to the histories and herstories of how we got to where we are now.

We use the voices of Ireland to recount the personal tales which, taken together, tell us something truthful. We take a look at where we are now and how we got here.

Box Office now OPEN (if any tickets become available through cancellation the Box office site will be immediately updated.)

BSS: Twelfth Night (20-26 June 2016)

‘Twelfth Night’ by William Shakespeare
20st-26th of June 2016
Petit Varia Theatre, 154 Rue Gray, 1050 Bxl
TICKETS

Twins Viola and Sebastian are separated during a shipwreck off the coast of Illyria, each believing the other to be drowned. Viola disguises herself as a man for her own safety and enters the employment of Duke Orsino, with whom she swiftly falls in love. Orsino however seeks the love of the Countess Olivia and sends Viola to advance his suit. Olivia for her part immediately falls for this interesting young ‘man’. Thus Shakespeare sets in motion the classic love triangle of one of his most enduring and popular comedies.

Meanwhile Olivia’s disreputable uncle, Sir Toby Belch, has invited his drinking companion Sir Andrew Aguecheek to pursue his own suit to Olivia. The puritanical Malvolio, Olivia’s steward, also harbours designs on his mistress and wishes to see Sir Toby and his drunken friends sent packing. Toby, with the collusion of Maria, Olivia’s gentlewoman, and Feste the fool, plots Malvolio’s downfall.

The entirely unexpected arrival of Sebastian on the scene adds to the confusion, which descends into mayhem when Olivia meets him, mistakes him for his twin, and marries him.

Make-up Workshop (6-7 Feb 2016)

Make-up Workshop
The Studio Theatre
6 & 7 February 2016

The ECC is delighted that Malinda Coleman has offered to share her considerable make-up skills by leading a make-up workshop on the weekend of 6-7 February.

Malinda has not only undertaken running the make-up for a large number of productions (Ed: I am particularly grateful for her incredible transformation of Lyn Wainwright into an extremely old woman in Three Tall Women), but has also already mentored others in this art. Most recently Malinda passed on her knowledge to Bryony Ullyet who then undertook the make-up for our production of Tom and Viv: Bryony has since worked on productions for the BSS and ATC.

This workshop is for anyone who wishes to learn more about make-up techniques for the stage, whether they have previous experience or not. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of the materials used.

Please register your interest, or find out more about this workshop, by contacting ecco@ecc.theatreinbrussels.com
