Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo tells the story of an anarchist railway worker who “fell” to his death from a fourth fl oor window of the police headquarters in Milan. Fo’s maniacal protagonist wittily probes the police offi cers who conducted the anarchist’s interrogation, discovering everything but the truth about what actually happened on that fateful night…

The updated translation by Men Behaving Badly writer Simon Nye propels this hilarious satire on police corruption into the present-day. Don’t expect a quiet night at the theatre!

The Day after the Fair (Swan-ECC: 26-27 Oct 2007)

Anna, a servant girl who has been somewhat befriended by her mistress Edith, meets an attractive stranger, Charles, at the annual country town fair. A second meeting leads to not unexpected consequences. Charles, a budding barrister, returns to London. Anna, genuinely fond of the young man, cannot read or write sufficiently to correspond with Charles so persuades her mistress to write on her behalf. Through this correspondence Charles falls in love with Anna, whom he believes has written the letters, and Edith falls likewise. How will it all end? With sadness for someone! But whom?

ECC: Honour (4-8 Dec ’07)

Award-winning play about the dissection of a marriage seen from four different perspectives – the wife, the husband, the mistress and the daughter. Author Joanna Murray-Smith won her first of two Premier Literary Awards with Honour, written in 1995 and now translated into 20 languages. Lyn Wainwright takes the role of Honor which has been played by Meryl Streep, Diana Rigg, and for which Eileen Atkins won an Olivier for her London performance. Both Martin Jarvis and Corin Redgrave have played George which will be played by Philip Deeks, with Sara Murray as Claudia and Jennifer Rankin as Sophie.

Payment may be made by bank transfer to the English Comedy Club 310 0627727-29. Proof of payment is required when collecting tickets and the name of the person collecting the tickets should be given on the transfer slip or computer printout. We reserve the right to sell unpaid tickets at the Box Office 15 minutes before curtain up.

ECC: Diana of Dobson`s (7-11 Oct ’08)

To celebrate the ECC’s 100th year, we are performing Cecily Hamilton’s Diana of Dobson’s, which is also celebrating its centenary.

The play is a comedy exploring the role of women at the beginning of the last century. It centres around Diana (Hilary Barry – Max Dix [ITG]), a shop girl who inherits a small fortune and decides to live a little of the good life. Mistaken for a wealthy widow, she soon attracts the attention of an older businessman (Richard Foxon – Journey’s End, Animal Farm) and a dashing but financially-challenged captain (Henri Colens – Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Café Theatre [ATC]).

The play has a talented and varied cast, mixing both new recruits to the Brussels stage and established actors, including Rose Blyth, Sara Hammerton, Alma Forsyth, Christianna Mason, Femke Beumer, Joanna Patrick, Bridget Peirson-Davis, Marion Tomkins, Guy Harrison & Attila Grózli-Nagy.

The play is directed by Conrad Toft, who also directed Accidental Death of an Anarchist, the ECC’s opening production of last season. Conrad says that this production “shows just how much and how little has changed in the last century; not only in attitudes to women but also in our ideas of society, wealth and, above all, comedy!”.

Performances will be on 7-11 October 2008 at the Warehouse Studio Theatre, Rue Waelhem 69A, 1030 Brussels (Trams 23, 33, 55, 92).

Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter won 2nd Prize and the Stage Management prize at FEATS 1986. Steve Challens recreates the production, with a twist,
with Abi Greef and Rachel Cuff.

Coward’s Fumed Oak won 3rd Prize and Best Supporting Actress for Paula McGowan as Elsie at FEATS 1993. Diana Morton-Hooper recreates her production with her 1993 Mrs. Rocket, Diane Gray, who will be joined by Abi Greef as Doris Gow, Sara Murray as adenoidal Elsie and Richard Foxon as the worm who turns, Henry Gow.

Helene Hanff’s 84 Charing Cross Road
Friday 24 April at 8 p.m.

84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff was the October 1992 production of the ECC staged at The British School.
Conrad Toft and Michelle van der Straaten recreate the characters of Frank Doel and writer Helene Hanff played by Nick Hartley and Ruth Lanzer in the 1992 production, and will be joined by Peter Finnigan, Sara Hammerton, Natacha Hesketh, and Joanna Patrick.

Ronald Harwood’s The Dresser
Saturday 25 April at 8 p.m.

Ronald Harwood’s The Dresser was directed by Richard Wells in November 1990 at the Treteaux Theatre. With just two changes of cast, the 1990 actors are still around and Richard Wells has gathered them together to recreate their roles in a blended version with snatches of video from that production. Join Nick Hartley as Sir, Diana Morton-Hooper as Her Ladyship, Lyn Wainwright as Madge, Philip Deeks as Geoffrey and Hilary Barry and Henri Colens in the roles of Irene and Oxenby originally played by Loretta Stanley and Christopher Nason. Nick Roche recreates his memorable portrayal of Norman, The Dresser.

ECC: Feats 2009 (29 May – 1 June ’09)

Private Lives (27-28 June ’09)

Everyone loves an intimate affair, and Private Lives is no exception. What is surprising is that Coward himself once dismissed the play and attributed its crowd-pleasing properties to nothing more sophisticated than the titillation factor of references to sex. Noel Coward wrote it at the height of his powers and it displays some of the best of his pungent and biting wit. John Osbourne called it ‘the greatest comedy ever.’ High praise indeed but totally justified.

Time has proved this tale of two divorcees who fall for each other all over again to be the kind of classic worth watching decade after decade. The play centres on divorcees Amanda and Elyot who both having remarried are in France with their new spouses. Not only do they find themselves in the same hotel on their wedding night but they are in adjoining rooms. The old fires start to burn again between Amanda and Elyot with devastating effect. Their passion swings from contented bliss to violent rows with amusing frequency.

This is a play that you can never tire of watching. Swan Theatre company has been fortunate in drawing together a cast from some of the strongest actors in Bedford, some of whom will be known to you from previous visits of Swan to the Warehouse.

ECC: Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me (22-26 Sept. ’09)

There’s an Englishman, an Irishman and an American being held hostage in the Lebanon… Not the start of a joke, but the premise behind Frank McGuinness’s modern classic.

Colum Hatchell, Patrick Stephenson and Craig Simpson star in this dark, surprisingly funny and thought-provoking play which describes the trials, tribulations and inner strengths of the hostages, exposing their uneasy friendship and petty rivalries, and revealing to us the depths of the human condition.

The show is on at The Warehouse Studio Theatre from 22 to 26 September 2009 and will then be reprised in Bedford, UK from 2-3 October 2009.

ECC/Swan: My Mother Never Said I Should (30-31 Oct ’09)

Swan will be performing My Mother Said I Never Should, Charlotte Keatley’s critically acclaimed play exploring the lives and relationships of four generations of women – Doris, Margaret, Jackie and Rosie – and how different generations strive to break free from the traditions and culture of their parents.

ECC: The Cherry Orchard (8-12 Dec ’09)

Lyuba Ranevskaya returns after 5 years in Paris to her family estate in the Russian countryside, where financial straits are leading inexorably to the sale of its famous cherry orchard. Chekhov’s last play, comic, ironic and melancholic by turns, presents a group of characters struggling in different ways to rise to the challenges of changing times. Despite its Russian setting, this play may have something to say to us all.

ECC: Three Tall Women (9-13 March ’10)

An elderly woman surprises her carer and a young visitor with a revelation from her past – but it is when she falls into a coma that so much more is revealed.

This dark comedy is about any(wo)man: who we are, why we are, how we are. It looks at life with a 360-degree view. It is about living life and the inevitability of death.

Warning: This play contains explicit sexual references

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd.

Tickets are €14 (€12 for 9-13members; groups of 10 or more on Tuesday to Thursday).

Some thoughts from the Director:

How to begin explaining why Three Tall Women is so good?

Well, to summarise: Albee’s words are wonderfully written, humorous, emotive and wise. His sense of humour dark and dry. And the simple but clever device that is Act 2 gives the audience a whole new view of the first act.

In 1994 Three Tall Women won Edward Albee his third Pulitzer Prize for Drama, some years after he had been written off as creatively ‘dried up’: it was quite a come-back!

His “characters” are self-absorbed and on the whole unlovable, and several reviewers have written “If you stick around for Act 2 …” They have a point!

Three women, one of them slightly demented, squabbling with each other over unpaid bills, grammar, diction, the day of the week and incontinence. An old lady reminiscing about horses and the unhappiness of her sex life. Where on earth is this play going? It is going towards the inevitable, and on the way it will address many of life’s issues.

If you already know this play you will smile at my reticence to say more, and will I hope be amongst the first to book your seats to see this wonderful piece brought to life by the excellent cast of Lyn Wainwright, Rachel Cuff and Charlotte Owen.

If you don’t know the play, you can of course read a summary on Wikipedia – but I would urge you not to: I hope that your first experience of Three Tall Women will be as breathtaking as mine was, that you will enjoy the questioning and the examining, and that you will leave the theatre reflecting on the life issues Albee raises.

ECC: The Red Death (24 April ’10)

The English Comedy Club is proud to present its entry for the 2010 Feats competition at the International School of Brussels on 24 April 2010 at 8pm. Based on the short story “The Red Masquerade” by Edgar Allen Poe this an original adaptation dramatised for stage by the English Comedy Club in Brussels.

This is the only performance in Brussels, the production will then be taken to Bad Homburg, Germany, in May to compete in the Festival of European Anglophone Theatrical Societies, so don’t miss your only chance to see the show if you can’t attend FEATS.

ECC: Savage/Love & The Dumb Waiter (21-25 Sept ’10)

A man. A woman. An empty room that soon will be filled with spilled secrets. And, oh yes, a convenient bottle of liquor to make the spilling easier. “Vincent River,” written in 2000 is almost doggedly naturalistic. It takes place in real time, in the present tense, in a recognizable London. Vincent River, starts deep and gets deeper, as both characters are peculiarly confessional right away. With no time for a gentle emotional warm-up, we struggle to immerse ourselves as fully as we would like in the repercussions of the murder of 33-year-old homosexual Vincent.

Hounded by the prejudiced taunts of the neighbours on her Bethnal Green estate, Vincent’s mother Anita has been forced to move to a new flat. Here she waits, in an almost furniture-free room, with only a bottle of gin for solace. Davey, who has long lurked outside, has finally been invited in. It was he who found Vincent’s body, he says, him and his fiancée.

The final destination of the piece is clear from 10 minutes in but as Ridley handles so adeptly the accretion of layers of detail, it makes the journey worth following. Moments of black humour and blacker horror sit side by side, as Davey offloads the knowledge that has been burdening him onto the one person who is desperate to hear. First staged 10 years ago at the Hampstead Theatre, London the themes of this play are, sadly, as resonant today as they were then.

‘Philip Ridley doesn’t write plays so much as dark hallucinations in which the world is skewed through his penetrating vision, so we look at it through new eyes… As the truth is exhumed and the dead seem to walk again there is a redemptive sense that it is through honesty in our personal relationships that absolution can be found.’ (The Guardian)

This is the latest in a series of great shows brought over from Bedford’s Swan Theatre Company in collaboration with the English Comedy Club.

ECC: Roman Around (10-11 Dec ’10)

The Show

Ryan Millar spent two years as a tour guide in Rome. As he says, “I showed up in Rome with no money and no idea what I was going to do, and eight months later I was a well-paid expert on the city.” Six months later he left. But while he was there, taking people through the incredible monuments and relating the fascinating and bizarre history to tourists, he realized it would make great theatre. So he wrote this show.

Roman Around: A Guided Tour of the Eternal City is the product of three years of thinking and writing. It is also the product of his love for the city and its history. For the audience, the show is both a guided tour of the city (including the Roman Forum, Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel) as well as a window into one man’s struggle to make sense of life in Rome.

Bio – Ryan Millar

Born and raised in Canada, in the past seven years Ryan has lived in Amsterdam, Vancouver, Rome, Brussels, and now London. After all that moving he hopes to stay in London for awhile. He has worked as an educational rapper, video host, barista, art educator, and marine naturalist. More recently he has been a touring sketch and impro performer with Amsterdam’s Boom Chicago, a communications manager in Brussels, and – of course – a tour guide in Rome.

Ryan appeared in the English Comedy Club’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist in 2007. His first play, The Power Force, won The American Theatre Company of Brussels’ One Act Playwriting Contest in 2007. He has recently finished his first short film Flunky, which he wrote and starred in. In the last year he has been working on an MA in Professional Writing at London Metropolitan University.

ECC: Private Fears in Public Places (25/2 – 5/3)

Diana Morton-Hooper (Honour, Absurd Person Singular) directs Alan Ayckbourn’s superbly constructed, sharply observed 2004 play for The English Comedy Club.

It follows seven characters, each with something to hide, searching for companionship and love in an emotional social blur through four tightly interwoven stories. She has gathered a cracking ensemble to blow away those winter cobwebs:

The English Comedy Club opens its 2011-2012 season from 20-24 September 2011 with Two, a black comedy by English playwright Jim Cartwright. It will visit The Place in Bedford on 31 September and 1 October.

Two is Cartwright’s second play and won the 1990 Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best New Play. It followed on from his earlier success, Road, and like that play deals with the gritty reality of northern working-class life in the 1980s.

The play focuses on the landlady, landlord and regulars of a pub in a Northern English town as they struggle to cope with the difficulties that life has thrown at them. All the parts are played by Ruth England (Oscar and the Lady in Pink, Mary Stuart, Moving Susan and FEATS best actress award recipient for Orca the Goldfish) and Rory Harvey-Kelly (ATC Café Theatre 2011). It is directed by Conrad Toft.

The English Comedy Club continues its successful exchange with an English amateur dramatics society, Swan Theatre Bedford. Swan has brought high-quality productions to Brussels for the past several years.

23rd May 1934, an old barn in a southern State of America -two of the most wanted people in the US are seeing out their last few hours, showing their love for each other, laughing at their past life are fearful for what is to come.

The writer, Adam Peck, has put aside the glamour and glorification of previous renditions of the story of Bonnie and Clyde and has got inside the people in this intimate work.

ECC: Families aren’t just for Christmas (6-10 Dec 2011)

This Christmas the ECC is offering its audience a mix of something old and something new: a mix of contemporary pieces by local authors Martin Westlake, Graham Andrews, Carrie Caunce and Conrad Toft together with some classic readings from Hans Christian Andersen, O. Henry, Sir Walter Scott and others.

There is an impressive cast, with actors old and new including Alma Forsyth, Sara Hammerton, Jenny Howard, John Howard, Janet Middleton, Rory Harvey-Kelly, Cherise Silvestri, Conrad Toft, Marion Tomkins and Richard Wells.

Together, they will take you on a journey from a 17th century Christmas, through the turn of the last century, tales of a dying parent, a first Christmas together, marital pleasure and pain and finally a trip into the future to see what Christmas might look like a hundred years from now.

ECC: Move Over Mrs Markham (2-13 Oct 2012)

Mrs Markham lends her flat to Linda Lodge to tryst with her admirer Walter. The decorator is planning to use to same apartment to dally with the au pair. Mr Lodge has persuaded a very reluctant Mr Markham to lend the self-same flat to rendez-vouswith a girl he has not actually met. Into this tranquil scene walks Miss Smythe, important potential customer to Messrs Lodge and Markham, who disapproves of any kind randy behavior. It’s about then things start to get a little complicated……

Presumption, an original, innovative theatre piece devised by Sheffield group Third Angel, is a relationship play with a difference. Intriguing for theatre lovers, the play weaves between the fictional relationship of the characters and the collaboration of two performers who start out on an empty stage…

ECC: Calendar Girls (12-16 March 2013)

Calendar Girls is based on the film of the true story of a remarkable group of women who decided to raise £500 to replace the sofa in the visitors’ room of the cancer ward of their local hospital: by producing a calendar with a difference. Instead of a calendar of spectacular local views, they produce a calendar with spectacular views of the locals!

This funny, but very moving play follows the changes this modest plan brings to the lives of these women. We follow them as they confront their fears and deal with the consequences of their success.

In fact, to date, the ladies have raised over £3 million for Leukaemia Research in the UK, and many other charities have benefited by following their lead.

The English Comedy Club is proud to follow their example and will be donating at least €2 from each ticket sold to Fondation contre le Cancer in Brussels.

ECC: Copenhagen (8-12 Oct 2013)

In 1941 the Danish Nobel Prize winning physicist, Niels Bohr, and his German counterpart, Werner Heisenberg, met at Bohr’s home in occupied Denmark. The former colleagues and good friends were now technically enemies. Today they meet once more, together with Bohr’s wife Margrethe, to examine the events of that mysterious meeting.

Tension, guilt, suppressed emotion, nuclear physics and human drama are all bound up in this intriguing play.
